General comments, problems encountered, special techniques or therapies used: |
Mare arrived at veterinarian's on a Saturday morning and on u/s she had a well developed follicle. Vet gave the shot that induces ovulation w/i 36 hrs ( prostaglandin I think). u/s at 24 hrs showed no change. sunday at 1800 hrs the follicle was beginning to "round up", semen was prepared and she was inseminated via a deep uterine horn technique with the pipette that delivers the entire contents one straw, repeated once for a total of 2 straws around 2000. Monday morning she had ovulated.
this situation was entirely lucky. We had no idea where she was in her cycle. She could have ovulated at any time within the 36 hrs, but we just got her at the right time. The semen had excellent motility, probably close to 100% but we only looked at the cells after insemination from the residue of the insemination pipette. Vet thinks we could have gotten by with just one straw.
I might add that lusitanos seem to be unusually fertile. |
